Stunning Natural Beauty at Your Doorstep

Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.

Located along the Avon River, NZ’s 2nd-largest city has Victoria Square at its centre. Surrounding highlights include the Canterbury Museum and the Gothic-style Arts Centre. Sumner Beach is a favourite location for locals when the sun shines.

Out towards the spectacular harbour town of Lyttelton is the Christchurch Gondola ride where you can enjoy a sweeping view of the city.

The South Island’s capital is a good starting-off point for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting. The majestic Southern Alps surround the city and offer world-class ski resorts such as Methven, at the foot of Mt. Hutt.

A large selection of motels and hotels are available on Tourism Bookings NZ, including in the vicinity around Christchurch International Airport.

Christchurch on a crisp, sunny winter's day is a great place to visit. Lots of cultural things to see and do including the Art Gallery. A walk by the Avon with a Peppermint Mocha Chocolate to warm up at the Riverside Market is great. The Quake City exhibition is really worth a visit. We had a drive to Sumner for fish and chips at the Beach Cafe and Ice Cream to follow.

Christchurch is a beautiful city with so much to do. Cafes, restaurants, parks, and attractions to suit everyone! We were very impressed with the Wigram Air Force Museum and always enjoy visiting the Art Gallery. Riverside is always a must!

Christchurch surprised me. The weather was lovely in Autumn when I visited. If its a walking holiday you like your in luck here. Everything is within walking distance! Hagley Park & Gardens in Autumn was without doubt the highlight. You must make time to explore it & that will take a day or two. You will not be disappointed with the Iiex Cafe delicious coconut cake with fresh raspberries! Eat it outside in the sun before you venture off to the Botanic & Rose Gardens. The city itself is so quaint & easy to walk around or hop on & off the regular trams that rattle through the streets. After all that walking around you'll need to replenish at The Riverside Markets - a great place for a food tour with wine & whiskey too! The CoCA Gallery & CHCH Art Gallery are lovely as is wandering around the cultural centre in that area & onto Worcester Boulevard. Do dine at Fiddlesticks in the evening if you get the chance ...yum! Must go to Little High & if pizza is your thing do not go past the pizza there!

It should be compulsory to visit the Quake Museum to understand why there are so many vacant lots. Christchurch is a modern city, extremely clean and everyone we talked to, is proud to live there. A must to visit are the Riverside Markets, The Church Brew Pub [a new experience!], the Art Gallery, the Arts Centre, take the bus to Lyttleton, a small fishermen village and, if possible, take the TranzAlpine train to Greymouth. We gave the trams a miss as we could walk everywhere from our accommodation but it is a fantastic way to see Christchurch from the comfort of the seat.

I was based in Hornby for my 3-day stay. The motel I used was perfectly placed for everything I needed to do, next to a lovely park and with easy access to restaurants and the Hub mall facilities for shopping. I wish I'd had a bit more time to explore how the city centre has changed since I was last there, but not this trip.

I spent 4 months in NZ and for various reasons and at different times, stayed about 9 nights/days in Christchurch, alone and also with my husband. We loved the vibe of the city. It felt a happy place, offering everything a city has to offer but in an intimate way. It felt safe, clean and it was lovely to see families enjoying the public bbqs and spaces. Lots of greenery and parks. A place that felt traditional yet new. Great places to eat, drink and watch the world go by. Really loved this place and I am not a city person! Riccarton House and gardens was a highlight. There are plenty of places around to explore for day trips too and the second hand bookshops in Ferry Road area are the least expensive I have come across in NZ! Could definitely keep going back there, even just for the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the locals.
