The river view, wharf view in the evening was gorgeous. The walkway and boardwalk are a desirable, peaceful place to walk. The beach was the highlight of our visit as well as the farmers market. We preferred the beautiful fresh food from the farmers market opposed to take aways and restaurants we've dined at previously. We ate at a variety of cafes, restaurants and take aways. Without naming them we'll definitely be buying fresh produce and using the BBQ provided at our motel or available at Midway beach to cook our own steak served with fresh local produce, including fine wine, bread and honey. It's easy to get around Gisborne, but be aware of hazardous drivers and pedestrians. On our next visit we will avoid over spending trying to source excitable and palatable cuisine including takeaways.

Full of character with many 19th c buildings still surviving. Lovely beaches east and west with excellent access. Strong Maori influence including Cook's landing interpretations. City easy to access, with outrageous parking charges made until midnight on Saturday night! With accommodation, restaurant, gifts, and fuel costs spent amounting to NZ$2000 over three nights of our stay... give us a break

There are better places to visit that are much less difficult to travel to than Gisborne, we went because we had never been before so it was good to see the place but wouldn’t go to the trouble to go back. Roadworks from Napier to Gisborne were many with many stoppages. Long slow winding road. Gisborne to Whakatane however was a very pleasant very scenic drive starting off with Gisborne's horticulture then farmland then through a native forested river gorge. Gisborne's main retail strip looks great and is well laid out, the palm trees set it off so well on a sunny day. The famous Eastwoodhill Arboretum was a bit of a let down, it was a big reason we finally decided to add Gisborne to our trip however it didn’t live up to the online pictures and information we saw of it. Basically it’s just hilly farmland heavily planted out sporadically with various trees and riddled with many tracks colour coded but good luck trying to completely follow a particular track as some markers weren’t there at various intersections. It’s nice for a bit of a hilly tree walk but there is nothing particularly organised or grand about the plantings that looks anything like you see of tree plantings in various Botanical Gardens.

My first time visit to gisborne. Town centre is not big, but it was interesting. I enjoyed the botanical gardens and small museum during my visit. My visit was the middle of winter, but still enjoyable.

I found the Cook Landing Reserve to be underwhelming, It was disappointing in that there was not much about Captain Cook at the site, just gourds. The Gisborne Museum was worth a visit. The beaches would have been lovely if not for cyclone Hale.
